The Chinese Navy has carried out maneuvers with real fire since April 18 for the first time since 2016 in the Taiwan Strait, public television reported.
The exercises that started at 08.00 will last until midnight.
Liu Jieyi, director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said that “the objective of the maneuvers is to ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China.”
The naval exercises take place a month after the US authorities approved the ‘Law on Travel to Taiwan‘, called to stimulate mutual official visits with Taiwan at all levels and strengthen relations between Washington and Taipei.
From China, they described the regulations of interference in their internal politics and a threat to relations between the Chinese and American Armed Forces.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Asian giant warned that this law issued false signals to Taiwan’s separatist forces and violated the principle of the ‘one China’ policy.
Beijing insisted that Washington correct its actions and stop maintaining official contacts with Taipei so as not to damage Sino-US relations and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The official relations between the Chinese central government and this island province were interrupted in 1949 when the Kuomingtan nationalist movement occupied the island after being defeated by the Chinese Communist Party during the civil war.
The relations between both Chinese territories were only restored at the entrepreneurial and informal level at the end of the 1980s, without official contacts between the authorities.
Beijing regards Taiwan as its rebel province and refuses to have diplomatic relations with any country that maintains them with Taipei.
