You are likely interested in rings causing you to stumble across this article. Whether looking for a class or a wedding ring, you will probably refer to the same size chart. How accurate are these size charts, and should you use them as your sole basis?
We’ll just right into it. We absolutely believe the cheap tool listed below is a much easier solution. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t provide a printable ring size chart for men & women in both cm and inches. Check out the tool underneath if you want to save yourself from making a very expensive purchasing mistake.
They seem convenient to use and are readily available online. All you need to do is print it. Alternatively, you can use a measuring tool. A tape measure is just one example. However, it is not good to use. We are against using a ruler because it is hard and does not flex easily.
To get the most accurate measurement of your finger, we recommend purchasing a tool. Whether you are shopping at Zales, Pandora, or Cartier, you need to own one. They are widely available in-store and online. For your convenience, you can shop at Amazon.
We will cover what you need to know about men’s and women’s ring size charts in the following sections.
How Are Ring Sizes Measured?
The most accurate way of getting your size is by using a kit. If you do not have one yet, we suggest purchasing one. Alternatively, below are the different approaches you can use when measuring.
Sizes in the United States follow a number scale, ranging from 3 to 13.5 for adults. Sizes for men range from 8 to 14. On the other hand, women’s ones are between 3 to 9. These equate to a specific number in millimeters. For example, a 3 is equivalent to 14 millimeters (mm). On average, women’s sizes range from 5 to 7.
Before you dig into measuring, there are a few things we need to stress out.
- Measure multiple times – Do not settle with a measurement you took once or twice. Your finger’s size fluctuates depending on temperature. It increases when it is warm and decreases when it is cold. We recommend you measure at least four times at different hours.
- Take note of your knuckle size – We recommend ordering half a size larger than your finger if your knuckles lean on the larger side. If you don’t, you will have difficulty sliding the ring through your finger.
There are three ways to measure your finger.
Use a Floss or String
Look for a piece of floss or string that does not have much stretch. It is a must so you can get a more accurate measurement.
- Wrap a piece of string or floss around the base of your finger where you would like to wear the ring.
- Using a pen, mark the spot where it overlaps initially.
- Take out your ruler and lay the string flat. Make sure to stretch the length for the most accurate measurement.
- Take note of the length in millimeters.
- Look for the size closest to what you recorded in step four. A 4 has a diameter of around 14.9 mm, while an 8 has a diameter of 18.1 mm.
Please do not pull the string too tight when wrapping it around the finger. If you do, you might get a measurement that is too large. Consequently, the rings you will purchase may be too large for you.
In several instances, men have larger sizes than women. The most common ones are sizes 10, 10.5, and 11. The most common ones for women are 6, 6.5, and 7.
Place a Ring You Own on a Size Chart
Option two is dependent on your existing rings. The confusion here might sprout when they have different sizes. When this happens, pick the one that fits most comfortably. Remember to fit at least four times before deciding.
- Look for a ring that fits you comfortably.
- Prepare and print a ring size chart that is true-to-size.
- Place the ring you picked in step 1 above the chart.
- Pick the one closest to the inside circumference.
For example, if the inside circumference is 46.7 mm, that is a 4. If the inside circumference is 67.2 mm, that is a 12. There may be slight variations per chart or table, so always refer to what you have on hand for the final measurement.
However, we do not recommend using option one or two because of accuracy. To get the most accurate measurement, please use a ring sizer tool.
Use a Ring Sizer
There is no one way to use this tool. Depending on the manufacturing, there are several possible ways to use it. You may refer to the owner’s manual or instruction guide instead. There are several options available online, such as on Amazon and eBay. If looking for one is too much for you, continue reading to know which ring sizer tool we recommend.
Are Ring Sizes Universal?
Yes, they are universal. A 10 in the United States has the same measurement as a T 1/2 in the United Kingdom. These have an inside diameter of 19.8 mm and an inside circumference of 62.1 mm. Wherever you go in the world and no matter what measuring system you use, the measurement will always be the same. It is what makes them universal.
Some are not available in all measurement systems. If not rare, you will not find a 0 in the United Kingdom or Australia. However, there is a 0 in the United States. It has to do with how much demand the model has in a region or country.
There are a few systems in the world, which we will briefly cover below.
Standardizations make something universal. ISO 8653:2016 defines sizes. Countries around the globe use this system, such as France and Switzerland. The ISO starts at 49 and go as high as 72. It translates to an internal diameter of at least 15.6 mm and at most 22.9 mm.
The United States, Mexico, and Canada use a numerical scale with 1/4 steps to specify size. Whole sizes have an internal diameter difference of 0.81 mm or 0.032 inches and an internal circumference difference of 2.55 mm or 0.01005 inches.
Australia, Ireland, and United Kingdom
Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom use an alphabetical scale with fractional half sizes. In 1945, the inside diameter was the basis for the divisions. These are in steps of 1/64th of an inch. In 1987, the British Standards Institution shifted to the metric system from the standard system. One alphabetical size is equivalent to a circumference length of 1.25 mm.
China, India, and Japan
For these countries, the measurements are on a numerical scale. However, these do not correlate with the circumference or diameter.
Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland
The sizes in Italy, Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland are specified using the equation: Circumference – 40 mm. For example, a ring with an inside circumference of 46.8 mm is equivalent to a 6.8.
The sizes in Russia are equivalent to the whole and half number round-up of the inside diameter. For example, a diameter of 15.90 mm is a 16, and a diameter of 14.27 mm is a 14.
Can I Resize a Ring?
Supposed you just received your ring and you find out it is too big or too small for you. What do you do? The best option is to visit the manufacturer and ask them to resize it for you. If this is not an option, you can ask for referrals from family or friends. It is important to look for a jeweler with an established reputation. You can also check their reviews online.
Most jewelers follow these steps when resizing it to make it smaller:
- The jeweler measures your ring finger.
- The jeweler will cut a portion to reduce its band’s diameter.
- It gets formed back into a circle and soldered together.
Once done, your ring will have no physical evidence of alteration. It will look the same as before, but it will fit better. Plain bands are easier to cut than those with decorations or carvings.
If yours is too tight, you may want to make it bigger. It is a more tedious process, but it is possible. The jeweler will have to stretch the metal, which goes as high as half a size larger only. Should you require it to be larger, the jeweler will cut a portion of the band.
An additional piece of metal is soldered. Just like resizing a ring to make it smaller, simple bands are less complicated and easier to make larger than ones with a design.
Ring Types You Can Resize
You cannot resize all types. Only metal ones can be resized. It includes platinum, gold, and silver. Moreover, there should be enough space in the band to resize. We suggest choosing a metal ring if you feel like you need to make modifications down the road.
If your band has stones, it may not be possible to resize because there is no metal. Do keep in mind some metals cannot be resized, such as rose gold and tungsten. These metals can easily crack and are very difficult to work with. They are too dense to work on.
If resizing is not an option, you can wear a tighter ring in front of the loose one so it won’t slide off your finger.
How Should an Engagement Ring Fit?
Your engagement ring should fit comfortably and snugly. It should not fall off your finger, but it should not be too tight. It should slide with a bit of resistance when you take it off. If it is slightly bigger, the jeweler can install a sizing assistant to keep it from moving around.
A sizing assistant is a small bar attached inside the interior if you are wondering. The sizing assistant should decrease the size by a quarter. It often addresses the swinging of a top-heavy stone.
Below is a step-by-step guide on measuring your ring at home.
How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home
- Wrap a string or paper around your finger’s base.
- Using a pen, mark the point where the material meets with itself.
- Lay it flat and measure the length in millimeters.
- Find the closest size on the ring chart.
Look for a ring size chart online before taking your measurement. These charts come in a standardized size, so don’t worry.
Ring Sizer Tool
Now you know these things sizing tools and the like. Which one should you buy? We think the best one is the Meowee Measuring Tool of all the brands and models available on the market. This set comes with an aluminum ring mandrel and finger gauges.
There are ones available in plastic as well, that could maybe save you $3. To best know how a metal ring will fit on your finger, you’ll want a tool that’s made of similar material. It just doesn’t feel the same way having metal wrapped around our finger as it does metal.
The mandrel measures the US sizes 2 to 15 and European ones from 41 to 76. The material keeps it from rusting, making it durable. It has smooth edges, which will not hurt your hands. When measuring, the temperature will affect your finger. Take at least four measurements before deciding which to pick.
Are Men and Women Ring Sizes the Same?
No, they have different sizes. Men usually have bigger ones than women, ranging from 8 to 14. Women typically range from 3 to 9. When it comes to the design, men’s rings appear thicker and bolder.
Ring Size Conversion Chart in mm
A size 14 has a diameter of 23.01 mm and a circumference of 72.3 mm. On the other hand, an 11 diameter is 20.6 mm, and a circumference of 64.6 mm.

Ring sizes are expressed depending on the region or country you live. People living in France or Switzerland should refer to European. In contrast, those living in the United States or Canada should use the US. However, these all convert to the same international diameter.
For example, a US/Canada 10 is equivalent to a 61 3/4 in France or 21 3/4 in Switzerland. You might be wondering why some charts have large measurements, such as 2.5 inches, 6 cm, and 63.5 mm. These refer to the inside circumference instead of the diameter.
Please refer to the below table to serve as your guide. We recommend using a tool to get the most accurate measurement.
|United Kingdom||USA/Canada||Germany||France||Switzerland||Japan||Ring Diameter (MM)|
|Z + 1||13||22||69||29¼||27||22.2|
|Z + 1.5||13½||22.6||71||–||22.6|
Using a ring adjuster is a temporary fix to adjusting the fit. It is a piece of coil that you need to wrap around the band. As a result, it creates a tighter fit. Most adjusters use polyvinyl chloride (PVC) because it is flexible and does cause an allergic reaction.
The following questions below are the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
The seven is usually a women’s size, leaning towards the bigger side of the scale. Some are seven, leaning towards the smaller side. On average, a 7 is the most popular in the United States.
Men have an average size of 8.5. On the other hand, women have an average of 6. This is dependent on a few factors, such as geographic location and ethnicity.
A six is typical for women. Theirs range from 3 to 9, making six the average.
A US six has an inside diameter of 1.65 cm and an inside circumference of 5.18 cm.
No, it is not accurate unless you are using the correct tools. Using a string, measuring tape, and the sizing chart is inaccurate. If you have the right tools at home, you should be able to get an accurate reading.
Yes, there is an app that can measure for you. Just like the answer to the above question, they are not accurate. The accurate way is using the right tools.
