After a long day of work, you sat down on the couch and turned on the TV. Finally, you could watch your favorite series. But your excitement was short-lived. Instead of diving into your favorite show, you were greeted by a snow screen. Well, it’s time to buy a new TV.
But that’s easier said than done. How should you read the different sizes? What are the dimensions of each? Though it may seem confusing at first, understanding how different sizes work isn’t that difficult. In this article, we’re going to answer every question you may have. Even better, we’ll help you find a model that will best fit your needs.
How are TVs measured?
The TV size refers to the length of its diagonal. It is the measure from the upper left corner of the screen to the lower right one. For instance, a 72-inch model has a diagonal of 72 inches. Keep in mind that the size itself doesn’t tell you anything about its height or width. That can be problematic since you will need these dimensions to see whether your model fits the room.
Each size also has a recommended viewing distance. This distance tells you how far from the screen you should be sitting to get the most immersive experience possible. But how can you tell what this distance is for your TV of choice? Fortunately for you, finding out couldn’t be easier. We’ve prepared an elaborate chart in one of the sections listed below with all the information you may need.
Measurements of the most common TV sizes – 72, 80, 82, & 85-inch TVs widths and heights
A TV size only tells you about the diagonal length – it doesn’t specify the other dimensions of your television. The sizes 72, 80, 82, and 85 are among the largest you can buy. This makes them an excellent choice for every living room. Below we’ve listed the dimension of each of these sizes. Just make sure you take the optimal viewing distance into account when you make the decision.
Measurements of 72-inch TV: how wide and tall is it?
A 72-inch model measures 62.8 inches in width and 35.3 inches in height. It has a surface area of 2217 square inches. For optimal viewing experience, you should sit about 10.1 feet away from the screen.
Measurements of 80-inch TV: how wide and tall is it?
An 80-inch model is 69.7 inches wide and 39.2 inches tall. It has an area of 2732 square inches. We recommend sitting about 11 feet from the screen.
Measurements of 82-inch TV: how wide and tall is it?
An 82-inch model has a width of 72 inches and a height of 41.1 inches. Its surface area is 2959 inches. The average optimal viewing distance is 11.5 feet.
Measurements of 85-inch TV: how wide and tall is it?
An 85-inch TV is 74.1 inches wide and 41.7 inches tall. It has a large surface area of 3090 inches. You should sit about 12 feet from the screen.
TV dimensions chart by size
Although sizes are based on their diagonal lengths, this information doesn’t tell you much about the other dimension. The width, height, and area all play a big role when purchasing a new one. After all, it must fit wherever you want to place it. Fortunately, we’ve prepared this chart that outlines the most important specs of every TV. We’ve even added the recommended viewing distance to make your decision even easier.
Keep in mind that the exact dimensions might vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. A 50-inch Samsung TV might not have the same dimensions as a 50-inch Sony TV. The specs might vary from model to model too. To know for sure, check the product description before you make a purchase. Nevertheless, this chart outlines the general dimensions you can expect for the most common sizes:

TV viewing distance
When hunting for the best TV for your room, it’s impossible not to come across this term. A viewing distance tells you how far you should be sitting from your TV. However, keep in mind that these values are very rough estimates. Several factors will affect what your optimal distance should be.
Firstly, you should know that the TVs made nowadays have a very high resolution. Since they are almost exclusively 4K or higher, you won’t notice any flaws on your screen even if you sit too close.
Of course, your eyesight quality will affect your experience too. But assuming you have no problems with your eyesight, it ultimately comes down to your preferences. In the chart above, we’ve listed the recommended viewing distances. However, they are not fixed in stone. Treat them like a general guideline rather than a rule.
The viewing distance depends on the field of view you wish to have. The closer you are to the screen, the wider the field of view will be. While this may provide you with a more immersive experience, it can be nauseating for some people. This is because you may have to turn your head back and forth a lot if you sit too close. If you sit too far, then you may have trouble focusing on what happens on the screen. As your field of view broadens, you’ll notice the environment next to the screen too.
Remember that you must work with the dimensions of your room too. Sometimes, it just isn’t possible to reach the optimal viewing distance because the room is too small. In this case, you should probably go with a smaller TV.
75 vs. 85 TV size
If you’re looking for a large model, you should start with size 75. But just how different is it from 85? For the most part, you can’t go wrong with either one. Ultimately, it comes down to how much space you have available for a new TV. A 75-inch model is 65.4 inches wide and 36.8 inches tall. On the other, an 85-inch model has a width of 74.1 inches and a height of 41.7inches. The surface areas are thus 2407 and 3090 square inches, respectively. Of course, larger sizes are generally costlier.
In terms of quality, they’re practically the same. If you stick with the optimal viewing, you can’t go wrong with either.
However, the optimal viewing distance accounts for only one person. If multiple people want to watch a movie together, a wider screen is much better. This is because it corrects the angle a little. So if you love a family movie night, go for the bigger size!
A TV size refers to the length of the diagonal, which runs from one corner of the screen to the opposite one. Although these sizes range from as small as 20 to as big as 160, you’re unlikely to consider them all. For living rooms, you need to concern yourself only with sizes from 32 to 85. While larger models lead to a more immersive experience, they are naturally more expensive. Furthermore, they might not fit in every room.
At first glance, you might not notice any difference between two different TVs. However, you must consider several factors before buying one. The most important ones are the dimensions and recommended viewing distance. It only makes sense – you won’t be able to fit an oversized model into smaller rooms. Sitting too close to large televisions is also bad for your eyes.
To find the specs of each size, refer to the chart in the section above.
Beyond that, you’ll have the budget to consider. Brand models such as Samsung and Sony will naturally cost more. However, they generally also last longer and might be a smart investment.
If you plan to stay this far away from your TV, you shouldn’t buy any size below 75. If you do, the screen will be too far away. That will make watching it quite unpleasant. Although size 85 is considered the largest one commonly found on the market, larger TVs do exist. They can go up to 160 inches. However, these are huge. Thus, they are used mostly in movie theaters.
How much wall space do I need for an 85-inch TV?
To find how much wall space your TV will take, you will need to look at its surface area. For an 85-inch size, this is 3090 square feet. Keep in mind that the size refers to the screen. You should account for a couple of extra inches just to be safe. Size 85 is quite large and heavy. Makes sure you use wall anchors that are strong enough to carry their weight.
To summarize, a TV’s size refers to the length of its diagonal. It is the distance from one corner of the screen to the opposite one. However, this information is not very useful on its own. When buying a TV, you need to know its width and height to see if it will fit in your room. The optimal viewing distance is another factor to consider. Generally speaking, larger models can provide you with a more immersive experience. However, you should base your decision on your room dimensions and the available budget.
