The deeper the sea, the more curious about the species that inhabit it. Here we tell you information about some of the specimens, take note.

Deep-sea fish are those that inhabit the ocean, which occupies about 70% of the planet. It covers about 360 million kmĀ² and represents about 1.3 billion cubic kilometers of water. The seabed contains mountain ranges with the highest mountains on Earth. It also has vast plains, savannas, many trenches, and volcanoes. In all this aquatic world live various species of animals, which become specialized as they descend to these remote and often unexplored corners of the earth.

Its population is estimated to be between 10 and 15% of all the world’s fish complexity. The richness of its species so far known ranges around 8000. They can be small or giant, like the deep-sea squid.

Their habitat

Deep-sea fish live in regions that are below 200 m in draft. They have a volume one hundred times greater than that of other species with shallower habitats. These are areas with high pressure as a consequence of the amount of water. Deeper, more volume and weight.

Low temperatures because the sun’s rays lose impact. Consequently, the luminosity is becoming poorer until it reaches its total absence. To make matters worse, food is scarce. These hostile environments have given rise to impressive adaptive processes, survival has marked an evolution of millions of years.

Some characteristics of deep-sea fish

According to the level of depth they receive their names. Mesopelagic, those that live between 200 and 1000 meters. Bathypelagic, between 1000 and 4000 meters. The abyssal do it between 4000 and 6000 m and make them, all those who swim below 6 kilometers.

These animals have their own characteristics. Non-existent traits among the inhabitants of shallow waters. Among its adaptations are photophores, luminescent organs that make it possible to produce light through biochemical reactions.

They also have a system that reacts to pressure waves from other fish. This is important, it allows them to stay safe from predators or communicate with their own species. An example of this is represented by the Atlantic viper fish, the scaleless glutton or the dragon with a chin.

What are deep sea fish

Despite all the technological advances, a large part of the seabed remains hidden from the eyes of humanity. What keeps many theories, myths and legends about wonders and monsters that inhabit dark and unexplored waters. Will the human being get to know the bottom of the sea? Time will tell.
