The recommendations of the Prefecture for those who use motor boats

The Argentine Naval Prefecture, together with the Ministry of Security of the Nation, carries out the “Safe Summer” program, reinforcing controls in the country’s waters to provide navigation security, verify compliance with current regulations on the matter and avoid accidents

The failure to comply with many of these recommendations, as well as social distancing measures and preventions related to the coronavirus. 

In this framework, the National Maritime Authority reminds all motor boat sailors to take into account the following recommendations, with the aim of preventing accidents and preserving safety.

  • Ventilate the engine compartment and bilges, pay attention that there is no spilled fuel or odor. If so, do not start the engine.
  • Check that the fuel tank vent is open.
  • Always check the engine, every time it must be started, without omitting any detail.
  • Check the battery connections.
  • Respect the maximum load of your boat and the number of people on board, as specified by the shipyard. Do not get on a boat overloaded with weight and people
  • Minors and people without a

Permitting license cannot drive boats • It is important that you steer your boat in a position where you have good visibility, beyond the bow of your boat

  • Reduce speed and increase the distance when passing other boats
  • Respect the rowing boats and their sailors: passing near them can make them lose their stability, which threatens their safety and even the lives of their crew
  • Carry a life jacket on board, with a whistle attached to it, for each crew member. Minors must wear it.
  • As basic and compulsory safety equipment, you must carry:

– Current red flares

– Rowing boat hook (it is advisable to carry two, if possible)

– Waterproof hand torch with batteries in good condition

– Hand fire extinguisher, approved by the Prefecture and with effective date

– Bilge bucket

– Anchor, chain and rope, according to the size of the boat

– First aid kit

– Signal mirror 

It must take into account other equipment according to the navigation to be carried out, established in the Annex ” A ”of Ordinance 1/18 Nautical-Sports Activities Regime.

To prevent fires on board, the following must be taken into account:

  • Do not carry out cleaning work using gasoline or light fuels
  • Check the expiration and condition of the fire extinguishers on board
  • Do not leave dirty rags or tow, soaked with greases or fuels and, especially, in areas close to points of high temperatures
  • Check that there are no leaks or drips from tanks, filters, pipes and other elements and components of the fuel system
  • Check that there is efficient ventilation, particularly when the boat is stopped
  • When the fuel is shipped, fuel spillage must be avoided, especially into the interior of the boat.
  • Check that the suctions and the bilge bilge system work correctly and are free of obstructions
  • Check the correct thermal insulation of the engine exhaust pipes and that they are properly away from the fuel tanks
  • The use is recommended exhaust manifolds, cooled by circulating water
  • Avoid accumulation of dirt in the engine and its accessories, especially grease, oil and fuel
  • If cylinders are carried on board, the use of engine room gas detectors is recommended and gas
  • It is recommended to constantly run the cylinder piping system, if available, in accordance with Ordinance 5/2000 Safety Standards for the Installation On Board of Domestic Appliances that use Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
  • Remember to close the carafes after use to avoid accumulation of gases in the event of a leak
  • The storage of fuel tanks (naphtha), auxiliary engines, should be done in ventilated places, and not in closed places where accumulation of gases may occur
  • No throwing cigarette butts on the floor.
