It is the worst shipwreck so far this year.

The UN refugee and migration agencies have confirmed that the accident occurred on Monday and that local fishermen managed to rescue 37 castaways. Among the 45 dead were five children, according to the statement.

The shipwreck occurred when the ship’s engine exploded off the coastal town of Zwara. The 37 survivors, mostly from Senegal, Mali, Chad and Ghana, were rescued by the fishermen and later detained by Libyan officials upon landing.

This new tragedy brings to 302 the victims counted on the dangerous Mediterranean route in 2020.

So far this year, European countries have returned more than 7,000 people who tried to cross the Mediterranean to Libya, whose maritime force is increasingly assuming responsibility for rescues.
