The incident took place in the town of Kearsley, in the United Kingdom.
A female mute swan died ‘heartbroken’ a few weeks after seeing how her nest of eggs were smashed by a group of vandals.
Wildlife defenders, who had watched the swans, pointed out that they had seen on May 20 several young people throwing bricks at the nest, located on one of the islands of the Manchester canal, in the town of Kearsley (England, United Kingdom), local media reported.
The activists noted that three of the six eggs did not hatch, however, then only one remained. “She laid six eggs, three were destroyed by the youngsters, then she was harassed by the dogs and a duck and she lost two more eggs, keeping one egg,” one of the residents of the town, Michael James Mason, posted on Facebook.
About two weeks ago, the male swan left its nest and has not returned since, possibly due to stress. Earlier this week, the female was found dead alone in the nest. “She probably died ‘heartbroken’ as she had a lifelong partner and he walked away due to stress,” said nature advocate Sam Woodrow.
