Three subjects were travelling in a speedboat with a large shipment of drugs in international waters off the Pacific coast of Central America, when the crew of a maritime patrol aircraft became suspicious and reported the vessel to the US Coast Guard.
The Confidence ship from the Cape Canaveral, Florida, Coast Guard arrived at the scene and began searching for the launch. Upon spotting it, the men began tossing the cargo, which was about 1,090 pounds, allegedly worth $18.7 million of cocaine, the Coast Guard said.
When ordered to stop the speedboat, the Coast Guard crew boarded the boat and discovered the drug. The three alleged smugglers were arrested.
The Coast Guard did not give details of the detainees or the date of the operation on their Twitter account, but reported that since April 1, the United States Southern Command began to “improve anti-drug operations in the western hemisphere to interrupt the flow of drugs in support of the presidential national security goals. ”
Coastguards said fighting drug cartels in the Eastern Pacific Ocean requires unity of effort at all stages, from detection, control and interceptions, to criminal prosecution by international partners and prosecutors for USA.
The interdictions, including the boardings, are directed and carried out by members of the US Coast Guard.
“Numerous US agencies from the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security cooperated in the effort to combat transnational organized crime. The Coast Guard, Navy, Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, along with partner allied and international agencies, play a role in anti-drug operations. ” the coastguards said.
