Scientists described the phenomenon as “incredible”, “completely strange”, and “really unusual”.
Images of a strange tornado that formed in the depths of the ocean off the coast of the Australian state of Queensland circulate on social media. The video was recorded by an unmanned submersible vehicle of the US Schmidt Oceanic Institute.
Initially, researchers at that institution classified the phenomenon as a ” benthic tornado ” (deep disturbances in the ocean that can erode and move sediments), and described the scene as “incredible”, ” completely strange ” and “really unusual”.
However, later the Schmidt Oceanic Institute clarified that, after analyzing the material in detail, it was determined that this tornado was caused by the vertical propellers of the submersible.
