According to the Mexican Council for the Promotion of Fishery and Aquaculture Products (Comepesca), these foods can prevent the spread of coronavirus, as they are a rich source of nutrients, which strengthen the body with proteins of high biological value and easy to digest, minerals, vitamins and fats.
“Fish and shellfish have a positive impact on our body, as they provide it with different nutrients, which strengthen our defenses, which consequently helps us to be healthier and with less risk of contracting diseases such as the coronavirus,” they point out.
He recalled that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) recommends consuming fish and seafood, at least three times a week, since they strengthen the immune system, improve health Cardiovascular, prevent respiratory diseases, are a natural antioxidant, improve memory, strengthen bones and are easy to digest.
In this sense, he stressed that these products are the main natural source of Omega-3 fatty acids -a type of polyunsaturated fat that the body does not generate naturally- but that due to their antioxidant function “are necessary to strengthen our defenses and keep us healthy”.
“The immune system is the body’s natural defense against infection, as it protects it from bacteria, viruses and fungi, producing antibodies that block and expel these potential disease-causing”, he explained.
Likewise, Omega-3 influences our cardiovascular health, by reducing bad cholesterol and reducing the risk of clots forming in the blood flow, in addition to conditions such as arrhythmias, heart attacks and diabetes.
Comepesca noted that in the case of newborns and in the first years of human life, their immune system is more susceptible to contracting asthma and other respiratory diseases, so it is always recommended to include fish and shellfish in their diet, since either through breast milk or direct intake , since the natural oils they contain help prevent these diseases.
“The consumption of DHA fats, present in these products, is essential for the brain development of the baby, since in the process of magnification there is a transfer of DHA from the mother to the fetus through the placenta, which contributes to cognitive development, visual and auditory of the child”, he expressed.
He stressed that selenium is a trace element that helps our body to produce antioxidant enzyme proteins, which protect cells against oxidative damage, protect the body from certain cancers and the toxic effects of heavy metals.
In addition, he stressed that fish and shellfish have a high content of phosphorus, vitamins A and B12, and folic acid, nutrients that promote concentration, memory and learning; while calcium acts in the good development and formation of the bones, which reduces the possibility of having osteoporosis.
