According to the media, the authorities are preparing to isolate the entire crew upon arrival in port.

At least 23 cases of the new coronavirus have been detected on the US carrier Theodore Roosevelt and authorities are preparing to isolate the entire crew upon arrival in port, media reported.

Earlier this week, three sailors were evacuated after testing positive for the coronavirus, in the first cases reported on a US missionary ship.

“More positive cases of covid-19 have been discovered,” chief of naval operations Admiral Mike Gilday said in a statement Thursday, without specifying how many.

Gilday added that other people are expected to test positive among the more than 5,000 crew members aboard the carrier, which is in Guam for a “pre-arranged port visit.”

No case is serious and none of those affected has been hospitalized, the admiral said.

The Wall Street Journal said there are currently “at least 23” confirmed cases and quoted naval secretary Thomas Modly as saying authorities are “in the process of testing 100% of the crew.”

“During the port visit, access to the base will be limited to the port area for Roosevelt crews. No base or regional personnel will enter the port,” Modly said.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt was previously in a port in Vietnam, although Gilday said it is difficult to link the cases to any particular visit.
