One of those affected is a surfer who participated in the tournament, who was unconscious and had to be transferred to a hospital.
Images of a dramatic incident in which two people were swallowed by a giant wave during a surfing championship in Portugal have been disseminated on social networks.
The incident occurred on February 11 during the World Surf League tournament, held in the town of Nazaré, north of Lisbon. The Portuguese surfer Alex Botelho was being helped by a jet ski, when two waves collided with each other, and as a consequence both Botelho and the rescuer flew through the air.
Seconds later, another wave fell on them and dragged them several meters. The surfer was briefly unconscious and had to be transferred to a hospital after both were rescued. The tournament organizer informed that the athlete suffered an injury, although unspecified, detailing that he is stable and that he will remain in the medical center between 48 and 72 hours for additional evaluations.
