The commander of the US Navy in Europe and Africa, Admiral James Foggo, said the United States would not allow Russia and China to dominate the Arctic and control the Northern Sea Route, writes Washington Examiner.
According to him, the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route should be equally used by all countries of the Arctic Council, and no one can claim this region.
“Russia considers the Arctic its territory. But in reality it is an international territory, and we are interested in it to remain free and open to all, ”said Foggo.
At the same time, he added that American companies are not interested in using the Northern Sea Route, since its depth is too small for ships from the United States.
In addition, Foggo said that China is not a member of the Arctic Council, but only has the status of an “observer,” and therefore, according to the admiral, has no right to use the Arctic waters.
Foggo also expressed the opinion that relations between Russia and China are not as close as it may seem, and that there will still be differences between countries, especially in the Arctic.
The Arctic Council is an international forum created in 1996 at the initiative of Finland to protect the unique nature of the northern polar zone. It includes Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, USA, Canada, Iceland and Norway. Another number of countries have the status of “observer”.
