Nearly 20 tons of cocaine were found in the ship, equivalent to more than one billion dollars in this narcotic
Federal prosecutors in Philadelphia, United States , seized a container ship operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Co. , and owned by JPMorgan Asset Management , after it was almost 20 tons of cocaine, an equivalent to more than one billion dollars of this narcotic, in what was described as one of the largest anti-drug operations in the US.
The US Customs and Border Protection Office seized the ship on July 4, according to a statement issued Monday.
“The Gayane MSC is the largest ship seized in the 230-year history of US Customs and Border Protection and follows the record seizure of nearly 20 tons of cocaine discovered on the ship,” said Casey Durst, Chief Operating Officer of field CBP in Baltimore.
“Taking a vessel of this size is an unusual enforcement action for CBP, but it is an indicator of the serious consequences associated with an alleged conspiracy of crew members and others to smuggle a record load of dangerous drugs through the United States. United”.
He noted that this action serves as a reminder to all shipping lines and vessel masters of their responsibilities to implement and enforce strict safety measures to prevent attempts to smuggle.
