The Senegalese authorities seized more than 798 kilos of cocaine hidden in various cars that were transporting a ship from Brazil .
The Senegalese Customs General Directorate indicated that the drug was discovered at dawn on Sunday, in 15 vehicles of a batch of new Renault brand cars that were transported on a ship from Paranaguá (Brazil) to the port of Dakar.
“The seizure was made on a ship called ‘Greater Nigeria’ from Brazil, ” Customs said in a statement.
Sources from the public relations and communication office of the customs institution indicated that “both Senegalese and foreign nationals have been arrested , as well as the commander (of the ship) and two people who were on board .”
“The ship Grand Nigeria had to pass, according to its itinerary, through the port of Thema , in Ghana , and through Luanda (Angola) to continue towards Hamburg (Germany),” the same sources added.
It is not the first seizure
The ship belongs to the Grimaldi Group , headquartered in Naples (Italy), as well as the freighter in which , on 26 June, another 238 kilos of cocaine were discovered in Dakar, also from Brazil .
In that seizure, the drug was found “in four vehicles, with traces found in a fifth , in a lot of 24 new cars ” also of the Renault brand, said the regional director of Customs of the port of Dakar , Babacar Mbaye .
In that case, the ship also came from the port of Paranaguá and had Luanda as its final destination.
West Africa is a transit area for the trafficking of cocaine and heroin from Latin America , through maritime and air transport to Europe.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), in this region there are also local laboratories for the manufacture of amphetamine-type stimulants and there has been an increase in the use of all types of drugs.
