The discovery of a dead sea creature on a beach in California (United States)  baffled the academic community of the place. This marine species  became the first specimen of its kind to be seen in the northern hemisphere.

It all started when an intern from the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) sighted the corpse of the animal on Sands beach, located in the Coal Oil Point nature reserve, which belongs to the academic center.

The student contacted Jessica Nielsen, reserve conservation specialist, immediately. “It was really exciting to collect the photos and the samples, knowing that it could potentially be an extraordinary sighting,” she said.

His initial assumption was that it was a fish of the species Mola tecta (which means in Latin means ‘disguised’ or ‘hidden’ ), due to its large size and its strange oval shape.

However, it was unlikely, because this type of marine animal inhabits waters of the southern hemisphere, and already, to see it in its natural environment is quite unusual.

Scientists wondered how it could be possible that the fish 2.1 meters long had come so far from the waters of their home, so they initially ruled out the theory.

After taking photographs and analyzing the collected genetic samples, the scientists agreed that there was no doubt that it was a moonfish.

“This sample has been positively identified as a Mola tecta, the sunfish, which is an incredible find because it is the first specimen of this species observed in the Northern Hemisphere,” Coal Oil Point Reserve confirmed on its Facebook page.

The species can reach  two and a half meters in length . They usually inhabit the waters of southeastern  Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America.
