Nearly a million shoes and more than 370 thousand toothbrushes were brought to the shores of the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean, according to the publication Scientific Reports following a study led by a specialist from the University of Tasmania (Australia).

A total of 414 million plastic waste items with a total weight of about 238 tons were found on a group of 27 islands belonging to the Outer Territories of Australia. Among the waste found there are many disposable items, such as bottle caps, drinking straws.

The materials on the results of the study states that the total volume of the found rubbish should be taken as the minimum value, since the specialists could not reach some beaches, and the search for litter on the coast was conducted at a depth of no more than 10 cm

The local population is only about 500 people.
