A father and his two-year-old daughter were dragged along the Rio Grande, while trying to cross the border.
A father and his daughter under the age of two lost their lives trying to cross the Rio Grande near the Mexican city of Matamoros, the wife and mother of the victims said Monday. The tragedy occurred Sunday afternoon in the city of Matamoros, in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, approximately one kilometer from the new international bridge.
Tania Vanessa Ávalos -wife and mother of the deceased who managed to be rescued- told the authorities that the water took the baby first and then the father went to look for her, but both were taken by the current of the river and disappeared.
Members of the Secretariat of the Navy, the State Police and firefighters personnel, began the search of the bodies immediately without obtaining positive results.
The marriage of migrants was originally from El Salvador and they had arrived in this Mexican city to request political asylum in the United States.
However, before the desperation due to the slowness of the procedures, they decided together with other migrants to cross the Rio Grande , according to the woman.
This Monday, June 24 at approximately 10.00 local time the dead bodies of the father and daughter were located by state authorities, military and Civil Protection personnel on the riverbank a few miles from the international bridge of Matamoros that links this city with Brownsville (Texas).
Also, the Government of Guatemala confirmed Monday that the bodies of three children and a woman found in Texas (USA) near the border with Mexico are Guatemalan nationality. “The Government of Guatemala reports on the unfortunate death of four Guatemalans abroad,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
He added that the bodies without life were found in the vicinity of the Rio Grande and the Matorrales de Anzalduas, in the Texas city of Mission.
