Russia Deploys a Naval Group in the Black Sea to Patrol During the NATO Exercises

The Russian Black Sea Fleet has carried out a series of control measures against “possible abnormal situations” during the Sea Shield 2019 maneuvers of the Atlantic Alliance.

Russia has deployed reconnaissance and attack ships  in the Black Sea to carry out monitoring activities and respond to possible unwanted incidents during the NATO Sea Shield 2019 exercises, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.

According to the military, the ships of the Black Sea Fleet, supported by aircraft and  coastal complexes of the Bastion and Bal missiles , will carry out “control” activities and will be ready to react in case of “possible abnormal situations” during the maneuvers of the Alliance.

Since the end of last month, Russian ships have escorted several NATO warships that have entered the Black Sea to participate in the exercises, which will be carried out starting Monday in Romanian territorial waters.

Sea Shield 2019 will last until Saturday and will include the participation of dozens of ships and aircraft from the US, Bulgaria, Greece, Canada, the Netherlands, Romania and Turkey, as well as military representation from Georgia and Ukraine. It is estimated that some  2,200 troops will integrate maneuvers.

Over the past few months, Russia has signaled NATO for expanding its military activity in the Baltic and Black Sea regions. “The military activity of NATO near the borders of Russia has reached an unprecedented level since the days of the Cold War,”  Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigú had asserted .
