The ships moved 800,000 liters of illicitly derived hydrocarbons, which means the largest seizure of fuel since the federal strategy against fuel theft began in the country.
The “huachicol” in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico was checked early this Tuesday, just a few hours after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador denounced “illegal traffic” of fuel in the maritime zones where Petróleos Mexicanos operates .
Elements of the Navy and the Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC), of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic, seized two ships carrying more than 800,000 liters of stolen hydrocarbons, at the sea terminal of Dos Bocas, Tabasco state .
This is the largest seizure of stolen fuel, since it started the strategy of the federal government to combat the “huachicol”, which occurs in pipelines of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and, also, in oil terminals.
The official party reported that an anonymous call alerted the security elements about the transfer of stolen fuel .
After the complaint, the authorities launched an operation that led to the securing of ships already anchored in port , and the arrest of 10 people, including captains and crew.
The two ships had loaded the fuel of illicit origin in the Coatzacoalcos end of Veracruz, and had anchored in Dos Bocas, López Obrador reported Tuesday at his morning conference.
In Dos Bocas, where a Pemex terminal is installed, the federal government plans to build a refinery for gasoline processing.
On the risk map of the Mexican oil company, Dos Bocas is identified as a “milking” area of fuel .
Since his campaign, López Obrado said his government would investigate the maritime terminal that produces 60% of the hydrocarbon consumed in the country , and where most of the export barrels come from.
In Dos Bocas, fuel is also stored in sea monoboyas, which then supplies to ships that take the product abroad .
“We want to see if there is no piracy, black market, because the ‘huachicol’ is a plague that invaded all activities ,” Lopez Obrador said at the time, referring to maritime oil activity.
“It is a robbery to the nation, and of course if this is proven it would have counted, in previous years, with the authorities of the company and those of the port, ” declared the governor of Tabasco, Adán Augusto López Hernández.
This is not the first time that a seizure of stolen fuel at sea occurs. In July 2017, elements of the Navy and Public Safety of Tabasco stopped a group of huachicoleros travelling in boats with more than 43,000 liters of gasoline.
His arrest occurred on the coast of the municipality of Paraíso, also in Tabasco, where the authorities identified the boats in which armed men also travelled .
Its strategy is to remove fuel from ships parked on oil platforms and then take it to land to hide it in ranches , authorities explained at the time.
