Government reports 300 complaints since 2017 and goes after criminal gangs that arrive on ships to oil platforms
The theft of fuel or ” huachicoleo ” is a crime that also occurs more and more at sea .
These ” piratas” have increased their criminal activities in the last two years, according to the Secretary of the Navy, who explained that at least since 2017 there are 300 complaints about this type of theft.
The modus operandi is the old style of the pirates, since the criminals intercept the ships of Petróleos Mexicanos ( Pemex ), board them, subject the crew and then milk the oil with a hose to their boat.
Given this situation and as part of the combat operations against the “huachicol”, maritime authorities keep a watch on the key areas, such as Campeche, Tabasco and Veracruz.
Last month, the Navy reported that 850,000 liters of illegal hydrocarbons were seized in two vessels off the port of Dos Bocas, Tabasco, an area considered to be the most important in the southeast and where a refinery is erected.
In addition, at least 11 people related to the “huachicol” were arrested.
