Thus the Civil Guard assaulted a floating nursery of fuel and drugs, which supplied other groups
The “hour D” had been set at 3.30 in the morning of last Sunday. At that time, six speedboats intervened to drug traffickers and piloted by civil guards of the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard surrounded one of the three islands that make up Chafarinas. On each of them were GAR agents with their faces painted black, helmets, vests and night vision equipment. In a few minutes they took over the “maritime nursery”, a platform for narco-lanterns that had been established in the archipelago as a refuge port from which to supply on the high seas with drugs and fuel to other “lords of hashish”. At the time of the assault there were four boats. One managed to escape, but had an accident and was located later. Six Moroccan individuals guarded and patronized them, with abundant provisions, sophisticated equipment, and a tent to rest.
At four o’clock in the morning, the command center established in the Commandery of Melilla -with two colonels supervising the device- breathed, after weeks of design of the operational complex in which more than 150 civil guards of air, ground units participated. and maritime. The operation Karsana has no comparison with any previous and has allowed to obtain unpublished information on the versatility to which the drug traffickers have paid.
Karsana began to be forged in January, when the Corps analysts detected new routes and procedures for traffickers to avoid police pressure in the Campo de Gibraltar and the rest of the Andalusian coast. Soon came the certainty that the Chafarinas had become an epicenter of narcolanchas to supply drugs and diesel to various organizations , a “maritime nursery”, which allowed them to act on the high seas and sheltered from the winds.
In the last half year the archipelago has managed to host up to eleven boats at a time. All were pneumatic semi-rigid, between 12 and 14 meters in length and with two, three or four engines, according to the needs. “They have been reducing because we have seized several of them in these months. Now they are illegal and more difficult to achieve and do not forget the price: more than 200,000 euros each, “explain sources of research. The agents have obtained data indicating the presence in Chafarinas of some of these new buccaneers for a decade.
Of the three islands that form the archipelago, located about 27 miles from Melilla (island of Congress, Isabel II and King Francisco), only the second is inhabited, guarded by a detachment of the Army. The military were the first to notice the presence of this platform that chose the island of Congress or King Francisco , according to the winds.
Nothing was left to chance as the investigators have verified. The boats, equipped with radars and cutting-edge technology, all left together before dawn with different directions. On the high seas they went to the marked coordinates. Those who had to transport drugs or fuel approached fishing boats that supplied them with the goods and once loaded (up to 3,000 kilos of hashish each) they sailed to the transshipment points in the Alboran Sea to deliver the cargo.
Some of them were surprised “in fraganti”, like the one intercepted in May when they were transferring 3,000 kilos of drugs to a luxury yacht near the coast of Fuengirola (Málaga). These boats made intermediaries with all types of boats : fishing boats, recreational yachts or Narco-Lanchas, which then introduced hashish to the Peninsula. At dusk, they returned to Chafarinas and hugged one another in anticipation of the next assignment.
When the Civil Guard -with which the Operations Command of the Defense Staff has collaborated- clearly understood the operative the device was designed. The Oceanic ship of the Corps, the Segura River, with more than a hundred agents on board departed from Melilla to the meeting point (about 20 miles from Chafarinas) with the half dozen speedboats that were going to surround the narcos. These had been sailing for more than six hours. “What a mess the sea was, Quillo,” said one of the agents. They changed, rested and at one o’clock in the morning the disembarkation began with the Maritime bosses and the GAR already prepared . They approached with such stealth that they surprised the criminals sleeping.
The six detainees have been imprisoned, accused of belonging to a criminal organization, drug trafficking and contraband . The penultimate refuge of the naropiratas has also been discovered. “Wherever they are, we’re going to be there: the Civil Guard.”
Change of methods and prices
Before the plan against the drug traffickers, it took between 24-48 hours to make the complete route to Morocco and back. Now they stay four and five days at sea to get around the agents. They need more fuel and pay more people; the wear of the boats is also greater with increasing time.
The Narcolanchas usually sail with four people. The pilot charges between 30,000 and 50,000 euros per trip. If the time increases, the price goes up.
It is the second member, the one in charge of the “GPS” and the navigation instruments. Charge 20,000 or 30,000 euros.
The owner of the drug is Moroccan and who places the “guarantee”, a kind of notary of the operation that has to verify that everything goes well. It is that person who gives the order to throw drugs into the sea if they are surprised.
It is the one who receives less in the narcolancha, between ten and fifteen thousand euros per trip.
