The Frigate Méndez Núñez Begins Its Deployment with the Aircraft Carrier Abraham Lincoln
For seven months he will accompany the US Navy through the Mediterranean, the Gulf, Indian and Pacific
The Spanish frigate Méndez Núñez (F-104) will sail this Thursday from the base of Ferrol with the mission of joining the US aircraft carrier’s combat group Abraham Lincoln.
Until October, when it arrives at the base of the US Navy in San Diego (California), the Spanish frigate will be part of the group of escort vessels accompanying this nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that displaces 100,000 tons and with 332 meters of length.
On Tuesday the aircraft carrier of the “Nimitz class” will anchor in front of the port of Palma de Mallorca, where its commander, together with officers of the Spanish Navy, will present this mission of defense cooperation between the US navies and Spain.
During this deployment with the Lincoln, the frigate Méndez Núñez will deploy in demanding scenarios such as the Persian Gulf or the South China Sea. In addition, he will participate in some naval exercises with navies of other countries such as India or Japan.
It is not the first time that a Spanish ship deploys with a US aircraft carrier. There were three previous participations: the frigate Álvaro de Bazán (F-101) in 2005 with the aircraft carrier Theodore Rooselvelt; Admiral Juan de Borbón (F-102) in 2011 with George HW Bush; and the Blas de Lezo (F-103) in 2012 with the Dwight D. Eisenhower.
