“Grande America”, a ship that had as one of its arrival destinations the port of our town, sank after a fire impossible to extinguish. This incident occurred last Wednesday and there is currently a maximum alert for the environmental contamination that may occur.
The first aerial observations of the French Navy had located a spot of hydrocarbons ten kilometers long.
However, the French institution Prefectura Marítima del Atlántico has reported that new reconnaissance flights have located two discharges, 20 kilometers apart.
Faced with this situation, the French authorities strengthened the means to fight against these discharges by also resorting to the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).
The shipping Grimaldi confirmed the data provided by the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture and the EMSA on the merchandise that housed the damaged ‘Grande America’: 2210 vehicles and 365 containers, of which 45 are classified as dangerous goods.
