Jewish Link Mexico and Israel. – As part of the exchange, several US cadets spent several months in Israel training and learning together with soldiers in the Course of Naval Officers at the University of Haifa.
The first two Israeli naval cadets that participated in an exchange with the United States Naval Academy (USNA) graduated on Wednesday from the prestigious Naval Officers Course.
The Israeli Navy signed the agreement with the United States Naval Academy for a biannual exchange program in 2017 and saw the two Israeli cadets spend 18 weeks at USNA, where they completely immersed themselves in campus life, sleeping, eating and learning with cadets from the US Navy.
As part of the exchange, several US cadets spent several months in Israel training and learning with soldiers in the Naval Officers Course at the University of Haifa, as well as participating in cultural and linguistic immersion programs.
” As part of the future officers in the Israeli navy, I think it’s important to go there. The fact of learning another culture gave us the ability to look at our marina from the outside. Look from the outside how our army works , ” one of the cadets who participated in the exchange told the Jerusalem Post after returning in June.
” We learned the culture of the US Navy, totally different from ours … from how they interact with the highest ranking officers to how they interact with each other, ” he continued.
” It’s totally different there, ” said the other cadet. ” There, there is a greater focus on the aspect of the university, which lasts four years compared to here, where they are only two and a half years and the rest are military exercises .”
The US Naval Academy It has agreements with several other countries, including Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Japan, Portugal, Singapore and Spain. According to The Capital Gazette, USNA is in talks to formalize additional agreements with Australia and Italy in the near future.
The USNA program at Annapolis lasts four years, and the graduates of the course receive a bachelor’s degree in science and commission as officers in the Navy or as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Graduates of the Naval Academy are committed for at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.
More than a thousand students graduated from the Naval Academy in 2018.
By comparison, with almost two and a half years in duration, the course for naval officers of the Israel Defense Forces is one of the most intensive programs in the army.
According to the army figures, more than 2,000 candidates register , of which only 90 passed the initial tests and only 5.5% of the candidates who took the course graduated on Wednesday.
At the end of the course, each graduate receives the Junior Lieutenant Degree, responsible for commanding naval vessels, as well as a bachelor’s degree in political science at the end of the Haifa University course. The graduates are committed to another 61 months of military service .
According to figures released by the army, three other cadets graduated along with male cadets on Wednesday and 10% of all graduates will serve on the new Sa’ar 6 corvette missile ships.
While the course opened its doors to women in 1998 and in 2014 the option to become a naval ship commander was available to women, there have been no female soldiers serving on missile ships before these five recruits.
In November, the military announced that six Naval recruits recruited into the Navy would serve for the first time in the Sa’ar 6. The new corvettes, which are currently being built in Germany, will have a completely separate section for female soldiers, complete with beds, showers and toilets.
The army said that ” the recruitment of the fighters is part of a long-term plan to absorb the new Sa’ar 6 missile .”
