On March 7, representatives of the Russian Federation and India can sign an agreement on the transfer of the nuclear submarine to the Indian military, the Economic Times newspaper reported on Monday. The amount of the transaction is estimated at $ 3 billion.
The report notes that this is a submarine of project 971 (class of Akula according to NATO classification). It is planned to reconstruct at the Russian shipyard. Indian equipment will also be installed on it, in particular, a communication system. The Indian side hopes that the preparation of the submarine will be completed by 2025.
Submarine in the case of the transaction will be called Chakra III. Its life in India is estimated at least 10 years. It will replace the submarine Chakra II, which the Russian Federation leased to India in 2012, the report says.
The newspaper stresses that Chakra III, if the contract is concluded, will become the third nuclear submarine that India will receive from Russia or the USSR: the first nuclear submarine (INS Chakra) was leased to Delhi in 1988.
