A 19-month-old American girl died on Sunday in Puerto Rico when she fell from the 11th floor of a cruise ship, some 46 meters high.
According to the agent of the Department of Public Security of the Caribbean country, Elmer Román, the grandfather played with the child when she slipped from his arms and fell through an open window.
“An American family where the grandfather held the girl against a window, the girl fell 11 stories to the concrete and dies. […] It’s a very brutal scene, very sad and tragic … At one point, one of her grandparents, It seems, in an act of games, exposes the girl to the open window and she fell out of his hands, “explained Elmer Román.
The family had travelled from Indiana, USA, to spend a vacation on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Freedom of the Seas. Some passengers aboard the ship, heard a heartbreaking scream after the accident, which occurred at 4:27 local time.
“We heard the screams of the family because they were very close,” said one tourist to the Telemundo Puerto Rico network.
“I looked at the mother’s screams, that tone, that cry of pain of such a nature, does not compare with any other cry,” added the witness.
The local newspaper Primera Hora revealed that according to the preliminary information, the girl, who was going to turn two in December, rushed to the void from a lower floor to the deck. It fell on the pavement of Pan American dock II in San Juan, where the ship was docked, as confirmed by the Ports Authority. He died in the hospital a few hours later.
In a Twitter publication, the Department of Public Safety of Puerto Rico regretted the event and explained that agents of the Bureau of the Puerto Rico Police and Forensic Sciences went to the scene of the events.
