A road in the United States was partially flooded due to heavy rains and several of these fish struggled almost to death from exhaustion to cross to the other side in order to mate. Several YouTube videos recorded the incredible event.
In a variation of the old joke about why the chicken crossed the street, several salmon were recorded swimming across a partially flooded road in the United States in a race against the current with the sole purpose of breeding.
In 2016, nature photographer Terence J. Alison captured in Washington the incredible moment in which a group of certain salmon from the Skokomish River made their way through vehicles passing through a stretch flooded by heavy rains.
The strange occurrence was recorded in several videos that became a trend on YouTube in which they showed how the salmon swam along the path covered by a few centimeters of water, raffling the deep parts to avoid getting caught like other fish.
According to fish breeding specialist Alexis Leonard, who was one of those who contemplated this unusual fact, salmon often go to streams near the Skokormish River to mate.
But streams usually flood when it rains heavily and can send salmon to various parts. “If they are lucky, they can end up at the creek on the other side of the road; if not, they will be completely stranded, ”the expert added to CNN.
As is known, salmon are born in fresh water, usually in cold, fast-flowing waters. They live in the rivers for a couple of years before going out to the ocean. They tend to migrate to the seas around Greenland, where they usually spend one or two years.
After growing considerably in size, they return to the same river where they were born using chemical signals and fighting their way to the spawning areas. The effort they put in to complete this task is such that salmon usually die after breeding.
