This Chinese underwater glider breaks the oceanic immersion record in the Mariana Trench.
The Chinese submarine glider Haiyan has broken the world record of depth of oceanic immersion of this type of vehicles to descend to 8,213 meters in the waters near the trench of the Marianas, reports CCTV. The unmanned submersible, which travelled aboard the maritime research vessel Xiangyanghong-18, returned last Saturday to the coastal city of Qingdao, east of China, after completing its mission in the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of the oceans of the world.
“We have done extensive testing of the performance of the underwater glider through a series of standard sea trials,” said Wang Yanhui, director of the Haiyan project.
During the six-day tests, the submersible went down to a depth of 8,213 meters, surpassing the depth of operation of said vehicle, of 6,000 meters and reaching more than 8,000, according to Wang Yanhui.
