The strategic 955 Borei submarine is twice as quiet as the all-purpose nuclear submarine of the US Virginia class, said Aleksandr Blagov, director of the Kurchatov Institute, who participated in the development of the Russian ship.
The first Virginia-class submarine was delivered to the US Navy in 2004, while the Russian Navy received the Borei in 2013.
“The fourth generation nuclear submarine Borei is twice as quiet as the American Virginia,” Blagov said, stressing that considerable efforts have been made to increase the stealth of the submarine.
The fourth-generation Russian nuclear submarines of the Borei-Borei-A project, equipped with R-30 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles, are expected to be the main element of the Russian strategic naval component in the coming decades.
The Borei has 170 meters of compliance, 13.5 meters wide and its displacement is 24 thousand tons. These submarines can be equipped with 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles R-30 Bulava.
The media have already labeled the 955 Borei ships a “nightmare” for the US and declared that the new Russian submarines are the most fearsome in the world.
