A group of scientists from the research ship Okeanos Explorer of the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) videotaped a strange creature that lives deep in the Gulf of Mexico.
This red-blooded squid with thick tentacles has baffled biologists because their anatomy and behaviour are different from the rest, according to The National Geographic magazine.
Using the remote-controlled submarine, the researchers were able to capture the creature in a video from various angles.
“My first reaction was, ‘What the hell is this?’ She did not look like any squid she had ever seen until we started to get closer and she started to turn around, “explained Mike Vecchione, one of NOAA’s experts.
According to the researcher, it is too early to talk about the origin of the mysterious squid. It may be a new marine species or simply a squid with an unusual posture. According to the scientists, the submarine could have frightened the creature, triggering a mechanism of defence in its organism.
The researchers plan to conduct one more study at night to see if it emits light like other bioluminescent creatures.
