Russia has serious plans to strengthen its positions on the Arctic islands, said Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, commander of the Northern Fleet (SF).
“Russia is returning to the Arctic seriously and for a long time. The Northern Fleet will continue to be strengthened on the islands and archipelagos of the Russian Arctic, “he told reporters on Wednesday.
The commander informed that the Northern Fleet plans to organize in 2018 a complex expedition to the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. “The purpose of the complex expedition is to study and make full use of the experience of the history of the development of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the interests of ensuring the security of the Arctic,” the commander noted.
Earlier, Evmenov said that the SF had “unique connections and parts”. “This is an Arctic motorized rifle brigade, a tactical group of coastal troops, air defense units that carry a military watch on the islands of the Arctic Ocean, the archipelagos of Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya and the Novosibirsk Islands,” he said.
On Novaya Zemlya there is a Russian nuclear testing ground. In total, during the active activity of Novaya Zemlya range from 1955 to 1990, 130 nuclear explosions were carried out. At present, non-nuclear explosive experiments are being conducted at the test site, which allow to fully simulate the damaging factors of a nuclear explosion to improve technical and medical protection, as well as to maintain the existing level of nuclear weapons development, increase its reliability and safety.
