Last week, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, was in Russia and met with his counterpart Vladimir Putin, with whom he spoke about the economic crisis in his country and signed agreements in financial, oil, defense and commercial. Yesterday, a few days before the meeting, two Russian bombers with the capacity to carry nuclear weapons arrived in the Caribbean nation.
As confirmed from the Kremlin, two Tu-160 bombers landed at the Maiquetía airport, outside of Caracas, after a flight of 10,000 kilometers. It is not yet known if they were transporting weapons or how long they will remain in the South American continent.
The Tu-160 has the capacity to transport cruise missiles with nuclear warheads within a radius of 5500 kilometers. They are the same bombers that participated in the Russian campaign in Syria, where they launched Kh-101 cruise missiles armed with conventional warheads for the first time in combat.
Russia is one of the main allies of Venezuela, whose isolation grows under the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, which accuse Maduro of undermining democratic institutions to hold on to power and provoke a more serious economic and political crisis than the Great Depression.
Venezuela has already bought more than 4 billion dollars in weapons from Russia since 2005, including helicopters, fighters and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles.
Maneuvers for defense
Yesterday, in a ceremony at the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, the Venezuelan Defense Minister, General in Chief Vladimir Padrino López, and the rest of the military high command welcomed members of the Russian Air Force who will participate in the maneuvers with Venezuelan officers. They are not the first: in 2008, officials from both countries carried out naval exercises in Venezuela that were called “Venrus 2008”.
“Nobody in the world is afraid of the presence of logistic planes that have trodden Venezuelan territory, we are builders of peace,” Padrino López told state media when defending the operations he said he is looking for is to prepare Venezuela for defense.
The US criticism
Russian-American relations are at their lowest point in the post-Cold War due to Ukraine, the war in Syria and complaints of Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Russia is furious with the presence of US arms and troops and NATO near its borders.
