Pyongyang Follows Naval Maneuvers Despite Dialogues with Seoul and the US

North Korea organized massive maritime simulations in the East Sea when it was immersed in recent meetings with South Korea and even with the US.

The North Korean Navy carried out a series of military maneuvers in the waters of the East Sea just as the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, was meeting last Saturday with the president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, as reported by the South Korean newspaper The Chosunilbo on Thursday.

The aforementioned exercises lasted until the next day as US officials held a meeting with their North Korean counterparts in the village of Panmunjom, the text reads.

This situation occurred while Pyongyang threatened to cancel the high-level cross-border talks scheduled for May 16 under the pretext of the joint air exercises of South Korea and the United States.

The North Korean state media in line with the authorities of his country demanded that Washington and Seoul should end the annual joint exercises scheduled if they did not want the advances in denuclearization to be ruined.

South Korean intelligence sources said on Wednesday that North Korea held live-fire drills and the size of the fleet was even larger than in previous years.

“Since December, the North has been organizing military drills at levels similar to those of previous years,” a South Korean intelligence official was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Pyongyang, which has approached positions with Seoul over its nuclear waste, has recently expressed a gesture of goodwill towards the normalization of its ties with the US, within the framework of which ordered the destruction of the Punggye nuclear centre on Thursday. -re-located in northeastern North Korea, where the Asian country conducted six nuclear tests.
