The Flow of Migrants to Europe Through the Mediterranean Sea has Declined

The flow of migrants to Europe across the Mediterranean in 2018 declined, but the number of deaths increased, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported.

According to the organization, in the first weeks of 2018 8 thousand 154 migrants and refugees arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean. Last year, for the same period to Europe reached 12 thousand 358 people.

As the experts note, despite the fact that the flow of migrants has significantly decreased, the number of deaths has increased. So, from January 1 to February 11, 2018 in the Mediterranean Sea, 401 people died, and in the same period in 2017 – 261 people.
In total, 589 migrants and refugees died in the world this year, dozens are listed as missing, cites IOM data.

According to the information of the organization, most of the migrants arrive in Italy: since the beginning of 2018, there have already landed 4 thousand 731 people. In addition, a significant number of refugees travel to Greece and Spain.
