A compound produced with a species from French Polynesia stops the production of calcium and then the tumor cells die.
They discovered the relationship of cellular calcium with cancer by decreasing the amount of mineral, the mitochondrial function decreases and the tumor cells die. This is achieved through a compound that comes from a sea sponge extract from French Polynesia.
With this compound, Chilean researchers have already managed to stop the production of this mineral by decreasing malignant tumors between 50 and 70% in a study conducted with mice.
Julio César Cárdenas, doctor of biomedical sciences and principal investigator of the Cellular and Bioenergetics Metabolism Laboratory of the University of Chile explained that the focus of the work was on “the metabolism of tumor cells to be effective in the greatest number of Cancers.”
Cárdenas also said that there are more than 100 types of cancer and that until now they tested the finding in “between seven and 10” observing “the same effect” in those of prostate, colon, breast, lymphomas and leukemia.
Within each cell of the body there is calcium in the form of an ion that accumulates in what is known as the endoplasmic reticulum and, depending on certain stimuli, is released.
“What we are doing is blocking the No Calcium channel so that the mitochondrial function decreases and the tumor cells die,” he explained. Through the compound that comes from a sea sponge, extract from French Polynesia, which researchers dilute and give to mice in an intra peritoneal fashion.
The University of California in Santa Barbara, United States, is already producing the same compound in the lab and with that obviate problems, such as the amount of material required, said Cardenas.
