Collapsed Crane and Container Removal Will Take Months

After the “Hansa Meersburg” collided with the berth No. 11 and the gantry crane No.112 on Jan 8 in Keelung, the terminal operator has announced that the collapsed gantry crane has to be removed first before the damaged containers can be removed per carrier for a joint survey in the terminal to mitigate the survey fee/time by the involved parties, including the ship’s owner, P&I surveyor, terminal surveyor, carriers/forwarders, surveyor and cargo insurers surveyor.

The inspection to the damaged containers and cargos was expected to be conducted two months later. The Letter of Undertaking/security raised by ULIC was approximately US$ 43 million, but the ship’s owner still negotiated with ULIC insurance.

All operations such as the removal of collapsed gantry crane and the containers and repair to the vessel were suspended unless the Letter of Undertaking/security was obtained by ULIC.
