After burning for more than a week, the “Sanchi” has finally sunk. The tanker went down on Jan 14 after suddenly igniting around noon in position 28 22N 125 58E, after an explosion, followed by high flames up to 200 meters height.
The tanker developed starboard side list of 25 degrees and finally, sank at around 3 p.m. 13 vessels and an Iranian commando unit had been taking part in the salvage operation, amid bad weather.
There was no hope of finding any survivors. After the collision the Sanchi drifted at about 1,4 knots south-eastwards towards the Japanese island of Amami Oshima.
