All About the USS Colorado, the New US Nuclear Submarine

The press service of the US Navy communicated in its account of the social network Twitter that the nuclear submarine USS Colorado became part of the US Fleet.

“It’s a technological and innovative miracle,” said Richard Spencer, secretary of the US Navy, during the submarine’s commissioning ceremony held in the state of Connecticut.

The value of the new submersible reaches 2.7 billion dollars, reports the Navy Times portal.

The USS Colorado nuclear submarine (SSN-788) was built at the Electric Boat shipyard, located in the city of Groton, Connecticut. The submersible weighs 7,800 tons, measures more than 114 meters in length and more than 10 meters in width. The ship can develop a speed of more than 25 knots (more than 46.6 kilometers per hour) while it is submerged in the water, reports The Maritime-Executive portal.

The USS Colorado has a nuclear reactor that does not need to be replenished during the service term of the ship. Hailed as the most modern and sophisticated attack submarine in the world, the USS Colorado can carry out operations near the coasts and in the deep sea.

According to the medium, the ship is flexible. Its multi-mission platform has a particular design that allows it to have seven basic capabilities: to be a tool in an anti-submarine war, a war carried out on the surface of the sea, to function as a means of transport for the Special Operations Forces, to be used in the operations of assault and during an irregular war, as well as carry out operations of intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance and mining.

The USS Colorado can provide support to the US Special Forces during extended operations, because it has a reconfigurable torpedo room, capable of accommodating a large number of personnel and equipment.

The new submersible integrates the Virginia submarine class and is part of Block III, which includes eight model ships from SSN-784 to SSN-791. According to Maritime-Executive, its bow was redesigned: 12 tubes of the Vertical Launch System were replaced by two large diameter tubes. Each of these tubes is capable of launching six Tomahawk cruise missiles, reports the media.

To make matters worse, the US naval constructors replaced traditional periscopes with two photonic masts that have digital infrared cameras installed on the telescopic boom guided by Xbox controllers.
