Three injured after fishing trawler Abou Al Wafa caught fire and sank off Agadir

Abou Al Wafa fireA Moroccan fishing trawler Abou Al Wafa caught fire at the anchorage off port of Agadir. The fire started during maintenance and welding works on board of the ship, which quickly spread to the whole deck and engulfed the vessel. The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene of the accident were sent civil protection tams, which tried to extinguish the fire. To the firefighting joined nearby ships, but flames quickly engulfed the superstructure and caused complete destruction of the vessel. All the crew were evacuated, but two firefighters and one crew were seriously injured during the accident and taken to the provincial hospital.

The fire completely damaged the fishing trawler Abou Al Wafa, which capsized and sank, still ablaze.

The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. The scene of the accident is under monitoring for oil leak and water pollution.

The fishing trawler Abou Al Wafa (IMO: 8820987) has overall length of 38.00 m, moulded beam of 9.00 m and maximum draft of 3.00 m. The deadweight of the ship is 274 DWT and the gross tonnage is 431 GRT. The vessel was built in 1990 by Manche Industrie Marine in their shipyard in Dieppe, France.
