Ro-Ro cargo ship Finnmerchant broke moorings and collided with nearby berthed vessel

FinnmerchantThe ro-ro cargo ship Finnmerchant broke its mooring lines during heavy storm and collided with berthed ferry Trica in the port of Hanko, Finland. The accident happened in rough weather and strong winds, which was one of the main circumstances, which caused the collision. The storm adrifted the the ro-ro cargo ship Finnmerchant to the vessel moored at the next berth, both bumping against each other. The accident was immediately reported to the local authorities and at the scene were dispatched tugs, which towed the troubled vessel and secured her at the berth again. The assessment found that damages were minor and the both ships passed safety inspection and experienced minor delays in their time schedule.

The bad weather caused sufficient problems for shipping in the area. The wind gusts reached speed of 30 m/s and waves were with height of 5-6 m. Fortunately during the incident there were no injured people and no water pollution.

The ro-ro cargo ship Finnmerchant (IMO: 9234082) has overall length of 193.00 m, moulded beam of 26.00 m and maximum draft of 6.20 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 13,274 DWT and the gross tonnage is 23,235 GRT. The vessel was built in 2003 by Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft shipyard in Germany.

The ferry Trica (IMO: 9307384) has overall length of 205.00 m, moulded beam of 26.00 m and maximum draft of 6.70 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 18,250 DWT and the gross tonnage is 28,289 GRT. After the accident, the vessel left Hanko almost on schedule.
