“The court came to the conclusion that the accident and its consequences are caused by the change in the vessel’s ownership of the ship’s structures, its overload, and the presence of a minimal amount of fuel on board. Moreover, the ship lacked a sufficient number of hydrothermotics and life jackets, “the report said.

Also, the press service noted, “the employee of the management of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, having received a bribe from the captain of the vessel, did not take measures aimed at curbing the violation of the legislation on safety of navigation on board.”

A large autonomous freezer trawler Far East, assigned to the port of Sakhalin Nevelsk (shipowner – Magellan LLC), sank for 15 minutes on the night of April 2, 2015 in the Sea of Okhotsk 300 km south of Magadan. On its board were 132 people, of whom 69 people were killed. The survivors of 63 people before their rescue were in ice water in the conditions of stormy weather and became involuntary eyewitnesses of the death of team members.Trawler in Sea of Okhotsk

The verdict has not entered into legal force yet, they added to the Prosecutor General’s Office.

One of the main causes of the disaster was the unsuitable state of the trawler. According to the investigation, the general director of Magellan LLC Yegor Gaschenko converted the vessel in the port of Busan in the Republic of Korea to increase the capacity of the trawler for daily processing of fish (from 140 tons to more than 200 tons), for which part of the ship’s structural components ensuring its stability was removed . In addition, the vessel with almost empty tanks was filled with fish for 1400 tons, which also worsened the ability of the ship to balance.
