The Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk will be able to handle vessels with a capacity of approximately 8,000-10,000 TEU from 2018, according to statement of OOO Ruscon, which is operator of the container terminal in the port. However, the operator warned that container business in Novorossiysk is currently facing a number of problems, including the increase of bunker costs, the imbalance of weight characteristics of exports and imports, the seasonality of demand, weather conditions, restrictions on places on ships, as well as the limited capacity of terminals for handling ships of more than 4,000 TEU. However, the operator is working on developing the loading capacity and handling vessels with larger tonnage, promising to increase capacity of approximately 8,000-10,000 TEU from 2018.
As another possible solutions, OOO Ruscon called also fixing berthing windows and extending ocean services to the port.
OOO Ruscon is subsidiary of the Delo group. It is an intermodal operator providing cargo delivery services in containers throughout Russia and CIS countries, as well as operator of container terminal in Novorossiysk.
