Nigeria, despite the threat of pirate attacks, has increased the ban on the use of armed security on board. As the press service of the Russian Trade Union of Seamen (RPSM), now any vessel on which representatives of security organizations will be found will be detained, and guards, who are in parallel serving the Nigerian fleet, will be sanctioned.
Rafael Osondo, representative of the Nigerian Navy Department, explained that the presence of armed guards in the Nigerian waters is not allowed on board ships, regardless of its type – hired contractors, police or military forces.
As an alternative, there are contract marine security services in Nigeria, which are managed by 20 licensed operators. These hired patrol vessels are staffed by personnel of the Nigerian naval and civilian fleet.
