The 30-meter Hargrave luxury yacht Limitless was engulfed by fire off island of Virgin Gorda, part of British Virgin Islands. The yacht was at the anchorage near the island, when the the flames erupted from short circuit of electrical appliances. The flames engulfed the whole yacht, but captain and the crew succeeded to safe escape via tender and abandoned the vessel, jumping into the water. They were rescued by nearby boats without reported injuries, but the fire on board of the luxury yacht Limitless extended to the main deck and navigation bridge. The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene were sent rescue boats and firefighters, who should try to get control over the flames. The salvage is under way and firefighters succeed to extinguish the flames, but the yacht was considered as total loss, due to the large damages caused by the fire.
“The captain said everybody is off, but it isn’t known yet how many people were on board. The police are on their way to interview the captain and the crew. They got off the vessel on their own tender; they weren’t rescued although we went to the scene. They had already decided to abandon ship by that stage”, said the Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) official, Phil Aspinall. “The salvage company is at the location. They are doing their best, but the vessel is pretty well gone, based on my honest assessment so far”, added he.
The investigation for the root cause of the fire is under way. Investigators, including the police, are still trying to ascertain more details regarding the cause of the fire.
