General cargo ship Kamelia disabled at approach to Kiel Canal

Kamelia shipThe general cargo ship Kamelia suffered engine failure at the approach to Kiel Canal. The vessel was en route from Skulte to Brugge, but remained adrift after blackout near the Kiel-Friedrichsort. The general cargo ship Kamelia lost propulsion power and drifted outside the fairway, where the crew dropped anchor to prevent grounding or further accident. The accident was reported to the local authorities and the ship was detained for further inspection and special survey before being allowed to pass through Kiel Canal. During the blackout there were no accident and no danger for the traffic at the approach zone of the canal.

During the incident there were no injured people and no water pollution. The investigation for the root cause is under way. The traffic at Kiel Canal was not affected. Later the vessel proceeded to the dock in Friedrichsort, where will be held the inspection before proceed to pass through the canal.

The general cargo ship Kamelia (IMO: 9188958) has overall length of 95.20 m, moulded beam of 13.20 m and maximum draft of 4.00 m. The deadweight of the freighter is 5,049 DWT and the gross tonnage is 2,999 GRT. The general cargo ship Kamelia was built in 1999 by Damen Shipyard in Hoogezand in Netherlands.
