Freighter Capricorn breached by ice in Kerch Strait

CapricornThe general cargo ship Capricorn collided with ice block and suffered breaches in Kerch Strait. The freighter suffered damage in ballast tank 8 area and ensued water ingress. The accident was reported to the local authorities and crew requested assistance in sealing water leak. It was ordered the general cargo ship to anchor in Kerch anchorage, where the damages will be inspected and the hull breaches will be patched. The water ingress was taken under control by the crew, but salvage vessel Spasatel Demirov remained at the site, monitoring the situation until the divers arrive and patch the hole. There is no immediate danger for the seaworthiness and safety of the ship.

The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. Fortunately there were no reports about injuries and water pollution. The vessel was detained until further inspection and safety survey.

The general cargo ship Capricorn (IMO: 8728098) has overall length of 113.90 m, moulded beam of 13.20 m and maximum draft of 4.00 m. The deadweight of the freighter is 3,286 DWT and the gross tonnage is 2,516 GRT. The vessel was built in 1974 by Zavody Tazkeho Strojarstva in Kamrno, Slovakia. During the collided with the ice block the vessel was en route from Kavkaz port inRussia to Tartous port in Syria, carrying 2,843 tons of barley on board.
