Fishing longliner Gure Uxua sank in Bay of Biscay

Gure UxuaThe fishing longliner Gure Uxua sank in Bay of Biscay on 50 nautical miles north off Navio, Spain. The vessel started getting water ingress in rough weather after mechanical failure of the main engine. The crew sent distress signal, which was received by MRCC Gijon, which organized rescue operation. All the 12 crew abandoned the fishing longliner Gure Uxua into a life rafts and were airlifted by coast guard helicopters. Some of the rescued seamen suffered hypothermia and were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Fortunately none of them was seriously injured and all are in stable condition without life-threatening injuries.

The local authorities initiated investigation for the root cause of the accident. The reason of sinking is still unknown, but vessel lost power and remained under transverse winds of the rough weather.

The fishing longliner Gure Uxua has overall length of 24.00 m, moulded beam of 6.00 m and maximum draft of 2.50 m. The gross tonnage of the ship is 127 GRT. The vessel was built in 1997 by Astilleros Balenciaga in the shipyard in Spain.
