A fishing boat arrived in Southland with a dead crewman on board. Another crewman was understood to be injured after an incident at sea.
A police spokeswoman said police were notified on Friday that a man, a Chinese national, sustained injuries while on board a fishing vessel in the Southern Ocean.
He had subsequently died.
The fishing vessel docked at Bluff port about 2pm on Monday. A Korean fishing boat, called the Southern Ocean, arrived at that time. The 63-metre vessel was built in 1997.
Police are investigating the matter on behalf of the coroner.
