Fire erupted in engine room of ferry Giovanni Bellini off Piombino, Italy. The vessel with 75 passengers on board was en route from Piombino to Rio Marina, but on half way one of the diesel generators started smoking and inflamed. The crew reacted immediately and activated the CO2 firefighting system and the fire was extinguished, but the vessel was disabled and the propulsion system was damaged. The ferry Giovanni Bellini anchored off Palmaiola island, roughly halfway between Piombino and Elba. The accident was reported to local authorities and at the scene of the troubled vessel was send salvage tug, which towed Giovanni Bellini back to Piombino. All the passengers were disembarked without reported injuries.
The local authorities ordered special survey and safety inspection of the troubled ferry. The investigation for the root cause of the fire is under way. According to the officials, the crew reacted accordingly and succeeded to extinguish the fire quickly without allowing it to spread in passenger compartments.
During repairs and inspection the vessel will be out of service on Elba line, but will be replaced by another ferry of the ship operator.
The ferry Giovanni Bellini (IMO: 8402357) has overall length of 71.15 m, moulded beam of 14.20 m and maximum draft of 3.30 m. The deadweight of the ship is 474 DWT and the gross tonnage is 1,573 GRT. The ferry was built in 1985 by Azimut Benetti Livorno shipyard in Italy.
